Who Can Participate?

Since only males have a Y-Chromosome only males may participate. Since males receive their Y-Chromosome from their fathers who received theirs from their father and so forth, only males born with the name Barnett may participate in the Barnett Surname DNA Project.

How can women and those not born with the Barnett surname participate?

Those who are not able to participate in the DNA testing may sponsor a male who is eligible. They can also contribute research data to the website which will in turn help others find their Barnett ancestry, which is what the whole project is about.

When you have decided to join the Barnett DNA project or have someone to sponsor and wish to order your DNA test kit go to our request page on Family Tree DNA and complete the questions. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Barnett

When you submit the information to Family Tree DNA a request is automatically generated and sent to the Adminstrator (Mic Barnette  mic@barnettesbooks.com ) Mic will send you a reply requesting information on where to send the kit, etc. This request will go to Family Tree DNA who will send your kit out the day after it is receieved.

Once the kit has been returned to FTDNA expect your results in about 4 weeks for the 12 marker test and about 5 weeks for the 25 marker test.

Once you have taken care of requesting your test kit please send Mic your Proven (not the one you think or hope you connect to) lineage. Check the website to see the format. Basically, we would like to have information on your ancestors in each generation, their dates, places, etc. The names of each ancestor's spouse, her parents names and children's names and spouses. The idea behind this information is to help each other but also help others who are trying to conduct Barnett research. For security reasons please do not include information on living people or else indicate they are still living. We will list you or whomever you wish as the email contact. if you would prefer yur name and email not appear on the website, I can be your contact and list my name and e-mail. I will thenn forward anything I get on to you.
